Difference between Linux and Unix
Linux is an operating system developed in 1991 by Linus Torvalds. The name “Linux” originated from the Linux kernel. It is open-source, and the operating system is free to use. It is used for computer hardware and software, game development, mainframes, etc. It can run various client programs.
Unix is a portable, multi-tasking, multi-user operating system developed by AT. It began as a one-person venture under the initiative of Ken Thompson of Bell Laboratories. It went on to become the most widely used operating system. It is used in web servers, workstations, and PCs. Many commercial applications are accessible in it.
Linux | Unix |
Linux is open-source, with many programmers working together online and contributing to its development. | Unix was developed by AT&T Labs, various commercial vendors, and non-profit organizations. |
It is an open-source operating system that is freely accessible to all. | It is an operating system that only its copywriters can use. |
It resolves any problem very quickly. Therefore, if a Linux client posts any threat, a team of qualified developers starts working to resolve this threat. | Unix requires a long time to get a bug. |
It supports more file systems than Unix. | It supports fewer file systems than Linux. |
File system supp – Ext2, Ext3, Ext4, Jfs, ReiserFS, Xfs, Btrfs, FAT, FAT32, NTFS | File system supports – jfs, gpfs, hfs, hfs+, ufs, xfs, zfs |
Linux provides two GUIs, KDE and Gnome. But there are also many other options—for example, LXDE and many other options | initially, Unix was a command-based OS. However, later, a GUI was called Common Desktop Environment. Most distributions now work with GNOME. |
It is used everywhere, from servers, PCs, smartphones, and tablets to mainframes. | It is used in servers, works, actions, and PCs. |
The default interface is BASH (Born Again Shell). | It initially used the Bourne shell. But also compatible with other GUIs. |
Anyone can use Linux, whether a home client, developer, or student. | It was developed primarily for servers, workstations, and mainframes. |
The source is accessible to the general public. | The source is not accessible to the general public. |
It was initially developed for Intel’s x86 hardware processor. It is available for over twenty different types of CPUs, including ARM. | It is available on PA-RISC and Itanium machines. |
It has listed about 60–100 viruses so far. | It has about 85–120 viruses listed so far (robots). |
Some Linux versions are Ubuntu, Debian GNU, Arch Linux, etc. | Some UNIX versions are SunOS, Solaris, SCO UNIX, AIX, HP / UX, ULTRIX etc. |
Interesting fact:
- Linux is only the kernel and an anInterestingomplete system used.
- More than 90% of the current Linux source code is composed by other developers.
- Initially, Linux was compiled using the GNU C Compile.
- More than 10 Linux-based mobile operating systems, such as Sailfish OS, Ubuntu Touch, Ubuntu Mo, bile, etc.
- Every major space program uses Linux.
