Best answer: The Luna Controller, Xbox One Controller, DualShock 4 Wireless Controller, PC mouse, and keyboard are Amazon Luna, compatible controllers. Other third-party Bluetooth controllers may require downloaded drivers to work or may not support all Luna features or mapped buttons.
Very few functional options (for now)
You can technically pair nearly any Bluetooth controller to Amazon Luna-compatible devices, either via Bluetooth or via a USB-C cable with data transfer. But unless Luna has explicitly been optimized for that controller’s software, you may find that the controller doesn’t work correctly. Only the Luna, Xbox, and PS4 controllers can be fully trusted.
For example, we successfully paired a PS5 DualSense controller to an Amazon Fire Stick, only to find that the Square button corresponded to “A,” the “X” button to “B,” L2 to L1, and L1 to R1, at which point we stopped checking and unpaired it. While you could technically adjust your thinking and just different press buttons while playing, that’s not something anyone would want to deal with.
Now that Amazon Luna is available on Fire TV without an invitation to the closed beta, you could take a chance on some of the best gaming controllers for Amazon Fire TV, including the Xbox and PS4 controllers, along with other confirmed play Fire TV games. We don’t know how others like the SteelSeries Stratus Duo handle Luna just yet, but we at least know they’re fully compatible with Amazon’s other games, so they should be functional.
Which to choose?
Without a doubt, your best option for Amazon Luna compatible controllers is the official model. It has an Amazon Luna Controller app that links your controller directly to Amazon’s servers and your account. That means that if you start playing on Fire TV and then switch to your phone, you won’t have to reconnect via Bluetooth to the new device — you can keep playing uninterrupted. It also gives you lower latency than a typical Bluetooth connection, game audio directly from the controller’s 3.5mm port, and a dedicated Alexa voice assistant button.
On the other hand, in our Amazon Luna hands-on, we found that the controller is essentially a more expensive Xbox controller with the same button layout and lack of rechargeable battery — except it’s slightly less comfortable to hold, has short trigger travel, and has stiff buttons. We’re not saying you should avoid it, but be aware that it will give you a different feel to which you may be accustomed. If you already own the Xbox Wireless and DualShock 4 controllers, you can at least be confident that they will fully work with Luna and other gaming platforms.
